Kenosha’s workforce has seen a dramatic shift toward desk-based and remote work over the past several years — and Dr. Murphy’s patient roster reflects it. Neck pain, upper back tightness, and lower back aches are increasingly common among patients who spend 6–10 hours a day at a computer. The good news: most desk-related spinal pain is highly preventable and very responsive to the right treatment when it does occur. Here are five ergonomic changes that can make an immediate difference.
Most people think of physical labor as the spine’s enemy — but sitting is deceptively demanding. Here’s why:
The spine can handle all of this — but it needs you to periodically move, vary your posture, and sit with intention.
This is the most commonly wrong element in desk setups, and it has a massive impact on neck health.
The rule: The top of your monitor should be at or very slightly below eye level. Your eyes should gaze slightly downward (about 15–20 degrees) when looking at the center of the screen.
Why it matters: If your monitor is too low (as it typically is with a laptop sitting directly on a desk), you’ll spend hours with your head dropped forward and down — a position that compresses cervical discs and strains the muscles of the upper back and neck. If it’s too high, you’ll strain your neck looking up, which also compresses the cervical spine.
Quick fix: Use a monitor stand or laptop riser. If using a laptop, pair it with an external keyboard and mouse so you can raise the screen without compromising your wrist position.
Your chair is your primary spine support system for most of the workday — use it intentionally.
Chair height: Adjust so your feet are flat on the floor (or on a footrest), your knees are at approximately 90 degrees, and your thighs are parallel to the floor. If your chair is too high, your feet dangle and your lower back loses support. If too low, your knees come up above your hips, flattening the lumbar curve.
Lumbar support: The lumbar support (the curved part of the chair back) should sit in the small of your back — the inward curve of your lower spine. It’s meant to maintain the natural lordotic curve of your lumbar spine, which reduces disc pressure and muscle fatigue.
The seatback angle: Recline your seatback 100–110 degrees — just slightly past vertical. Sitting perfectly upright at 90 degrees actually creates more spinal muscle tension than a slight recline.
Upper extremity positioning directly affects the neck and upper back.
Keyboard position: Your elbows should be at 90–100 degrees with your forearms roughly parallel to the floor. The keyboard should be close enough that your elbows stay near your body — reaching forward strains the shoulder and upper trapezius muscles, which connect directly to the neck and cervical spine.
Mouse position: Keep your mouse close to the keyboard so you’re not reaching to the side. A mouse pad with a wrist rest can help reduce forearm and wrist strain.
Wrist position: Neutral — not bent up or down. Keyboard wrist rests should support the palm, not the wrist, and should only be used when you’re not actively typing.
No ergonomic setup eliminates the problem of prolonged static sitting. Your spine needs movement — it’s how the discs get their nutrients (they have no direct blood supply; they rely on the pumping action of movement to absorb fluid and expel waste).
The rule: Move intentionally every 30–45 minutes. This doesn’t need to be a workout — it means:
A simple strategy: set a quiet timer for 45 minutes. When it goes off, stand up for 2 minutes before sitting back down. This habit alone has remarkable effects on end-of-day fatigue and spinal comfort.
“Tech neck” has become epidemic. Looking down at your phone — especially for prolonged periods — is one of the fastest ways to develop cervical spine problems. The average American spends 3–5 hours per day on their phone, often with the device held at chest level or lower.
The fix: Hold your phone at eye level when reading or scrolling for more than a minute. Better yet, limit prolonged phone scrolling sessions. When you must look down, take regular breaks to look up and gently extend your neck.
Even with the best workstation setup, desk-related back and neck pain can develop — especially if you have existing spinal dysfunction, previous injuries, or structural issues that predispose you to problems. Chiropractic care addresses the underlying mechanical causes of pain that ergonomic adjustments alone can’t fix.
